Meet your local host at Calangute – at St. Alex Church. Today we explore the village of Calangute by walk, visit the St. Alex Church – Its one of the oldest churches in Goa and was founded by Franciscans, is popular among tourists for its architectural beauty. The church features two towers, altars and a white dome, which can be seen from the entrance. This church was originally founded in 1595, which makes it one of the oldest surviving churches in Goa. The church that stands currently at this site was constructed by the local people in 1741. In 1765, the towers of this church were installed, while the sanctuary was rebuilt in 1916. Walk through fish lined streets and meat markets,
spice sellers and other grocery vendors and soak in the culture of Goa when you
visit the Calangute bazaar. When here, you can also shop for anything that
interests oneself, you shall be taken to the Tibetian market. Good for
Shopaholics, Experience Seekers, Photo Fanatics . The streets of Calangute are
packed with shops offering a wide range of goods, namely souvenirs, metal
crafts, leather items, clothes and Jewellery, not just from Goa, but from other
parts of the country as well. The beach stretch is full of shacks, hawkers
selling sarongs or astrologers or fortune-tellers waiting eagerly to read the
fortune of the tourists. Proceed towards the Shantadurga temple – considered to be the local deity of the village (proper clothing must). The main festival of this temple is popularly known as “Shigmo” and includes procession of various deities in different carriages. Later hop for a brunch- English breakfast at B-T’s corner or Infantaria Cafe and for the vegans we hop to plantain leaf Restaurant for a plate of hot piping Idlis. You can end the tour with all smiles.
